Hoo boy, this issue moves along at a nice clip, don't it? This issue hits the ground running and doesn't take a break until the end. I really liked the opening fight in this issue, mostly because I like seeing Barnes fight. He's depicted as such a "smart" fighter, who can improvise and adapt to regain the upper hand when he needs to. I really love it when Crossbones enters the fray though, because it really shows how much these guys are surprised by Barnes' methods. I laughed out loud when Crossbones, looking shocked as hell, cries out, "Ahhhh! Freakin' stabbed me!" They just don't know what to do with him, and I love that.
The scene with Barnes in front of the mob was good too. The role of Captain America isn't just about punchin' Nazis anymore, and I'm glad that Brubaker had Barnes step up and try and do something along those lines too. I'm also glad, though in a bittersweet way, that it didn't work. There needs to be some difficulty for Barnes as he fully assumes the role of Captain America, otherwise it's just going to be too easy for me. You can't assume a legacy of 60+ years and have it be easy.
I liked the scene between Barnes and Widow too. It was a nice change of pace from the first two thirds of the book, and seeing Barnes smile at the end (which was drawn incredibly well, by the way) was actually heartwarming and made me smile in response.
I'm not sure what to do with the cliffhanger reveal at the end though. Partially because I'm not sure what crazy path Brubaker's going to take us down with it. The clues leading up to this issue had me guessing something along these lines, but since we barely know what the lines are right now, it's hard to comment further.
