From the senses-shattering start to the fighting finish, Brubaker and McNiven pull out all the stops for Captain America #1 and give true believers a non-stop ride of action, intrigue, history and heroism.

The story, which sets its initial focus on Captain America, Nick Fury, Sharon Carter and Dum Dum Dugan being mysteriously targeted by a former World War II ally known as Bravo (who is working with a more familiar and nefarious foe), is easily accessible and presented with a flawless unity. Not once is the overall product weighed down by a need for background information or filled with unnecessary retconning. If the success of a comic book is to be measured according to the impression left after reading, then Captain America #1 earns an unending reward as one of the great delights of the issue is that new (or even the most cynical) readers are quite likely to be left wanting more rather than needing more of the characters and situations; fortunately this is a sensation easily satisfied by any of the past years of Captain America comics by Brubaker.

What is so spectacular about this issue other than the senses-shattering action, pulse-pounding mystery and incredible art of Steve McNiven? How about a new type of Hydra agent! The death of an old friend! The return of a past allies and enemies! And a final page that is a shocker to anyone with even the most remote interest in Captain America!

For all the reasons that make comics great, Captain America #1 is the one book that all comic fans should be reading. There is more to this issue than super soldiers, villains and spies; there is a very positive and post-probabilistic sense that works without question though the entire issue and perhaps is even what defines “The Heroic Age.” Captain America #1 is a comic book that is too good for a bag and board and safe haven in long box; read this book then pass it along to a non-comic reader and see what they have to say.
