Let me start by saying that I made this my pick of the week. This is the first Captain America stand-alone comic that I’ve ever read. My previous experience with Captain America in comics has always been with him as part of the Avengers or in cameo appearance form. I had no expectations coming into this book, and I told my comic book shop to set me aside a copy, but don’t mark it down as one of my regular subscriptions until I give it a couple of read throughs.

After reading it just once, I’ll be talking to my comic shop to have them make this one of my regular books.

I have a ‘working’ knowledge of Captain America lore, but by no means am I well versed in the story arcs that featured Rogers or Bucky. I can’t name the lesser enemies that Cap may have fought outside of Red Skull or enemies he would’ve faced as part of the Avengers. But this book really worked well in the fact that it highlighted the major lore of Captain America, and fed you enough of the finer details of the finer details of Steve Rogers past without making it feel like an anthology book. This book really was a stand-alone book, and I feel like I met a character with depth and range. Never once did I get the sense that I would be lost with subtle obscure references while reading this series.

I’ll be setting aside a 5 book trial run for this based on the quality of #1. If anybody was on the fence out there of whether or not you should pick up another book, I’d say that this one was worth the chance (even if it is another $4 to your weekly total).
