No one was more skeptical than I when Marvel decided to capitalize on the success of Rick Remender’s “Uncanny X-Force” by putting out two new X-Force books. But after a somewhat slow start, “Cable and X-Force” is winning me over. This issue is one of those “the plot thickens” installments where the tension is supposed to ratchet up, and a ratcheting up of tension is exactly what occurs. Suffering from an excess of scruples, Colossus turns himself in, is imprisoned at the Raft, and finds that he has never been more popular with the ladies. He gets visits from two girlfriends, Kitty Pryde and Domino. Dennis Hopeless evidently wants to make “Cable and X-Force” the X-Book with attitude, and I certainly like Domino’s sexy attitude as she quotes Britney Spears to Colossus, telling him, “If I said I want your body, would you hold it against me?” And speaking of attitude, Boom Boom is back, and looking good as she rides a jet ski while wearing a bikini and swilling champagne. Boom teaches the guards at the Raft not to underestimate her as she and Dom break into the prison. Cable’s premonition from last issue apparently requires X-Force to travel into space, so he, Forge and Dr. Nemesis steal a cool space ship from S.W.O.R.D., prompting Dr. Nemesis to have a “sciencegasm.” Meanwhile, at the Raft, the story ends on a cliffhanger with Boom Boom about to free a nasty looking eight limbed alien. One assumes that freeing this alien is important to Cable’s plan to avert disaster.
Salvador Larroca’s detailed, sexy art has never looked better, and really suits the tone of this comic. I have never seen anyone do a better job of representing Wolverine’s ridiculous, lush mop of swept back hair. Larroca’s new look for Dr. Nemesis actually gives the character some sex appeal, with a new costume and a tousled hairstyle. Boom Boom looks great in her bikini. Larroca draws superheroic bodies as well as Dale Eaglesham or Nicola Scott.

Good review. I’ve really been enjoying this book since the shaky first issue. Each issue has added an element that adds to the plot and takes the book in a different direction than where I initially thought it was headed. That cliff hanger, while you know it had to happen eventually, was great. I’m glad some one else is enjoying it though I thought I was the only one!
