A perfect zero issue. So many times companies put out a zero issue that is just not worth the price of admission because it is either pure filler or half encyclopedia. Brightest Day #0 is neither. Johns and Tomasi instead filled this 56 page issue with a compelling story throughout, that gives readers a taste of whats coming next, while also hitting on the emotional impact of the return of the Brightest Day characters. Guy bringing Oreos and milk to the Martian Manhunter really struck a cord with me. Soranik's treatment of Jade and the Hawk's reminiscing about old lives both rang true. For all of its strengths, the greatest achievement here is that the issue is both a single story, featuring Boston Brand, and a number of little stories featuring the rest of the characters that returned in BN #8. The key is that Brand's story provides the glue that holds all of the individual stories together and transforms the issue into a single narrative. In addition, the issue had solid art throughout, surprisingly by a single artist, Fernando Pasarin, which is always welcome. In an area of fill in artists and giant size issues with multiple artists, Pasarin really delivers here. My jaw never dropped but the art did an incredibly effective job telling the story and thats all I can ask.
