The follow-up to BPRD: 1945 is off to a bang-up start. The Hellboy mastermind Mike Mignola teams up with fellow BPRD alum and horror expert Joshua Dysart and the result is a great start to a wonderfully dark and suspenseful story set in the years following World War II. It’s hard to say anything bad about anything set in the BPRD or Hellboy universe. Since 1994 this franchise has produced solid comic after solid comic. Mignola still holds a unique and powerful voice in this universe and it still doesn’t feel stale.

The art in this issue is truely the gem of this adventure story. Gabrel Ba of Umbrella Academy teams with his twin brother Fabio Moon and the results are stellar. It’s pretty clear that these two artists are twins because it’s almost impossible to see where one style begins and the other ends. Those readers who are familiar with Umbrella Academy know it’s not a huge leap to BPRD and the off-beat, almost cartoonist style works well in this pulp universe. The art shows a strong use of color and shadow that has become a staple of these comics. Ba’s art is simultaniously light and dark and I can’t say enough good things about it.

In short this is everything a BPRD book ought to be and the art is some of the best the franchise has ever seen. All BPRD/Hellboy fans owe it to themselves to pick this book up!
