I use to despise Booster Gold. I was not a fan of Giffen's JLI. That was then. I started reading Booster Gold again they began the back-up Blue Beetle feature. When Jurgens left I bailed and swapped those issues for something new. I dropped a lot of DC books at that time, call it "event fatigue". Since then I have read a LOT of sub-par books from a lot of publishers that were all just depressing. Honestly with Marvel pandering to moviegoers and DC axing Doom Patrol and R.E.B.E.L.S. I was in a funk. I needed something good from the "big 2".
DC has delivered something special with Booster Gold #44 IMO. Something that if you aren't careful, you may miss it.
Dan Jurgens is THE guy to do this book. Booster isn't one of those "broken heroes" Marvel is so fond of. He isn't jaded, sad or beaten, he is a hero in the classic comic book tradition. He comes into a world that has gone wrong and he just deals with it. Has an entire city armed like Ft. Knox coming down on him and he keeps dodging while Skeets plays wingman. Then at the end comes face to face with Doomsday and loses his wingman. His response is pretty much a "f**k me" moment. It's all pretty simple, like comic book 101 and man does it work!
Jurgens art is classic. Classic as in, this is how to do a super hero comic.
This book IMO is a MUST BUY for anyone following "Flashpoint". It is a perfect lead in.
I know Jurgens is writing JLI come Sept. I will be on board. I have been a fan of comics for 4 decades and I have seen a lot of phases and trends. Booster Gold #44 is IMO everything I love about comics. A very human hero facing long odds in a silly suit just because that is what HEROES do.
