When these (nearly) pointless Watchmen bastardizations began, I bought every first issue, and from there, decided to only continue with the series I liked the most. Ozymandias won (miles above my second choices: Silk Spectre and Dr. Manhattan).

Every issue of Ozymandias has completely sucked me in, drowning me in comic book ecstasy. Though this is largely in part due to Jae Lee’s masterful compositions, much credit is due to Silver and Bronze-Age scribe Len Wein. I’ve always thought that Len Wein was one of the better, old-school writers (below Steve Gerber and Don McGregor, above Dennis O’Neil and the rest), but this is by far the best thing I’ve read that he’s written.

Ozymandias has surpassed my expectations and given me hope that maybe the rest of the Before Watchmen books are okay to. That being said…

Before Watchmen didn’t need to happen. At all. Watchmen in itself is already so dense and complex, it needed no elaboration and fleshing out. Sure, we got some good (maybe great) stories, but will it help or impair our experience the next time we read Watchmen? Oh well.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Do we need another Batman story? Watchmen will always stand on its own. But damn, I really like these character, and I was glad to read more stories of them. There is no character in comics like Ozy. He’s right on the line between hero and villain, I love it.
