I re-read all 6 issues, this series holds up very well as a single storyline. Issue #6 was the worst issue, tho, for 3 reasons: 1) Mostly unnecessary, this issue just repeated Watchmen canon. 2) The death of Marla, his best assistant and part-time lover, should have been more interesting and I think we should have seen Ozy struggle with that a little more than he did. I like when Ozy is the smartest guy on the planet, not a cold emotionless husk...they are not the same thing. 3) One of the biggest problems w/ Watchmen (the original) is why the Comedian, this hardened ultra-cynical bastard, would become a weeping schoolgirl upon learning of Ozy's plan. This issue there was an opportunity to explore that and Wein didn't take advantage. Jae Lee's art and innovative panel layout were just superb throughout all six issues. And Len Wein gives a very interesting, page-turning fleshing out of Ozy's life up through the squid event. It will be interesting in the months ahead to see people's reaction to these works collected. For me, the Before Watchmen series have had exceptionally strong creative teams and a rich world to explore, with the result being comics that are well above the majority of books on the stands. But of course, peoples' reactions to the whole concept has proven to be a very strong filter on how much people like the actual books. Let me add, btw, that I would give Wein a "5" for the whole series, I just thought this issue was the weakest.
