Was it a bad move to wait for trade? That’s what I’ve been thinking about since Greg Rucka’s and J.H William III’s run started way back when. It seems like everyone and their mother were loving this book and I felt foolish for waiting. Well we now have an oversized hardcover for this ‘amazing’ run; did I miss out in issues?

Turns out…..No I didn’t.

I’m not sure why but Greg Rucka has always been hit or miss with me. He has done some amazing work, there is no doubt there. For some reason though, maybe just lately, I haven’t thought of a comic I like of his. This title is no different because I really didn’t care about the story in this. I like the villains and I think Kate Kane is a very interesting woman. I’m glad the hoopla with her being a lesbian is over and we can just see how to write a very interesting woman superhero. Rucka keeps that side of her life visable at all times, but doesn’t exploit it or overuse it; which I like. But then we get into these monsters fighting for Kate and her backstory and…..I just felt very bored reading it. I wonder if a lot of others felt the same way. Cause I only know one reason to really buy this hardcover.

J.H. Williams III is a fucking god and I wanna worship him forever. Good lord I missed out on some breathtaking visuals that’s for sure. So many two page spreads, and irregular panels, I think I’m in love. But then I turned the page and see some aneorxic mime (aka Kate Kane out of costume) and it brings me back to reality. William’s pages with Kane as Batwoman is absolutely gorgeous no two ways around it. But the stuff outside the costume…..I mean they are still beautiful in their own way. But seeing Kane outside the costume just really bugged me. I did love that sequence with her at the ball dancing with people; that is probably the best sequence in the whole book.

For art fanatics, you are going to love this book. It has everything and then some (even with slight hitches here and there). But if you’re looking for a well crafted story with interesting characters well…..I say look elsewhere.

  1. Yeah, gotta say I agree with you on most of that. Overall, I really enjoyed this run and am glad it got the praise it did. But Rucka was just average on here. I take that back: on the first two parts of "GO!" he was AMAZING, but the other five issues collected here were mediocre. I like the overall "saga" of Kate, but I think it was poorly constructed, giving us "Elegy" before "GO!", when "GO!" had all the seeds to make us care (more) about "Elegy". This kept Kate at arms-distance from readers until too many issues in, and sales took a nosedive by then (look it up). Which is a shame. I also thought Alice was a pretty annoying villain, and half the things she said were pointless. Don’t get me wrong, though, this series was/is definitely one to watch out for, and not just for JH Williams. Kate’s a great character; too bad it took us so long to get to know her better.
