Ah, Batwing. What to make of Batwing.

There’s a lot I like about Batwing, the biggest thing being it’s nice to see a super-hero in someplace other than North America. After all, this is supposed to be a comic UNIVERSE. Batwing himself is an interesting character, with an unusual background. And the issues have all been pretty good, including this one.

But that’s the problem: the issues are always just, “pretty good.”

My two biggest complaints are exemplified in this issue. The first is that Batwing always seems to have to rely on Batman. Even in this issue where it’s not just Batman, but the JLI. It’s like we have to constantly remained that he’s part of Batman Inc. I want to see Batwing fly on his own. We’ve had glimpses, but not enough spotlight. Let the title character have the main stage and fly solo.

The other thing I find slightly problematic is that the issues, while enjoyable, are pretty much by-the-numbers. This issue wraps up the fight with Lord Battle way too quickly and neatly. You get the feeling there could have been more depth to the story but it never was explored.

The art is good. The writing is good. The problem is it just stays at that good level. I think this title could be so much better. In the meantime, good is enough to keep me on board.

  1. I stopped reading Batwing around the end of the first arc. Sad that such a cool premise as a Batman of Africa has been turned into just another generic superhero. If they got back to the ideas of the first arc with African problems and an African setting, I’d jump back in. But in a Batwing book, I have no desire to see Nightwing and Guy Gardner on the cover. Let the guy have his own book or not.
