I'm gonna spoil the hell out of this comic so if you haven't read it yet.... click that "back" button my friend. But first let's take a trip down memory lane: Remember when Finch's Dark Knight #1 came out? Nixon was President. The 8-Track was just starting to turn heads. Star Wars was breaking box office records. And now issue #5 completes the story Finch set out to tell eons ago and I for the life of me couldn't remember what the fuck was going on, so I had to go back re-read issues 1 thru 4 to refresh my memory - which took about 4 and 1/2 minutes to do given that the majority of this comic is splash pages and sparse dialog. Maybe I'm being too hard on Mr. Finch, I will give it up for his art work - the dude can draw like a mother f'er. Beautiful stuff and worth the wait. But he stopped drawing the damn comic after 3 issues, then all we are left with his is writing - which I'm sorry to say isn't worth the wait. The fill in artists did a pretty good job of keeping the look of Dark Knight close to Finch's, but it just wasn't as good. And speaking of that story, it pretty much could have been told in 2 issues - not 5. Dawn Golden is a childhood friend of Bruce Waynes. She goes missing. Batman investigates and discovers a demonic plot to raise Dawn's Satan-worshiping ass back from the dead. The only problem is that Dawn needs to be sacrificed in order for him to return. In the meantime he'll just hold up inside Ragman's body and kill bums to past the time. Batman has a run-in with The Penguin and Killer Croc and gets fucked up for a little bit by Croc. But he's Batman and he escapes the death trap and rescues Dawn! YAY! Oh shit, but wait, a bunch of demons snatch up Dawn and take her to her Father / Ragman and he kills her and comes back to life. Dawn Golden, we hardly knew you. Luckily Batman and Etrigan bust in and take care Dawn's Dad, and Etrigan recites some Hallmark Card poetry on our ass, "Roses are red, violets are blue, Dawn Golden is Dead, thank god this comic is too." ... well at least until a new issue 1 drops in Sept.
