All right, we all know our feelings towards Batman 'RIP'. Some of us love it for being an original and over the top insane thrill ride. While some of us depise it for being too wacky for it's own good and is so confusing not even Neitzche could translate it properly. Well boys and girls gahter round, cause if you fall within the latter then you should pick this hardcover up. Okay so it's a big lie saying 'it answers some questions raised in RIP' but if you dont know anything about this Black Glove group......eh picking this up would be a pretty good idea.
Morrison has been pretty much toying us with RIP for a long time now. Hell if I go back and read 'Batman and Son' and even 'Resurrection of Ra' storyline I bet I could find one tiny little moment that is referenced for this event. But standing alone on it's own, these three little mini's in this hardcover are quite freshing. First we have the 'League of Batmen' where some internation Batmen have gathered on a small island to catch up and be in awe of the original Bat. Of course someone bat-s*** crazy has to come into town and we got a pretty good mystery on our hands. Morrison is great at writing very old heroes/villians, hell I'm a Batman nut and I dont even know any of these people. But it doesnt matter cause standing alone from previous canon's of Batman this arc works well. Then we got the highly controversal 'Joe Chill in Hell' where we see Batman hallucinating and remembering his past. This is where RIP is heavily referenced as Dr. Hurt, Bat-Mite, and some other crazy stuff will occur during this event. Seeing Bat-Mite is a bit of a weird feeling, seeing how he is a Golden Age character...and it's ridiculous, but Morrison makes it work here again cause as long as he's an hallucination then Bat-Mite works.
Overall the art is pretty soild on all fronts. We got a bunch of different artists, but only one could reign supreme for RIP. The panel layouts are very unqiue, especially for the Batmen arc. Trying to read panels layout as a bat is a tad confusing, but I cherish the artist for trying something different.
Obviously if you want to get the whole gist of Morrison's Batman run you need to read even earlier then this. Mentioning it again, I doubt this hardcover is the true start of RIP. You could go back another year and find some early seeds growing for this. But if you need some idea of what's going on, and enjoy a very well written story, look no further then this trade.
Art: 4 - Very Good
