What you need to know:Bruce Wayne comes one step closer to returning home. This time he finds himself in hard boiled detective tale.

What you’ll love

Classic detective tale: Morrison throws us into the detective
story just as Bruce and the reader begin to put all the pieces of the
story together. Morrison pays homage to noir, and at the same time puts
his own spin on it.

Art: Ryan Sooks art perfectly fits this noir tale. This is especially apparent in the way he draws the Fem Fatale of the story.

Readers Rewarded: Morrison is known for his complex plots, and
this one is most complex to date. There’s a plethora of easter eggs, and
nods to the Batman mythos. Morrison is a continuity fan’s wet dream. If
you’re paying close attention Morrison rewards you. .

Mythology: Morrison has made Bruce Wayne’s childhood his own
personal playground. It’s the kind of thing that would normally drive
fans crazy, somehow Morrison gets away with, most likely because he does
it so masterfully.

What you won’t

Convoluted: There are times when I think I’m not smart enough to
understand what the hell Morrison is doing. It’s like being a little kid
in the room and having an adult joke go over your head.  No one packs
more into a single issue as Morrison, sometimes that’s a good thing and
other times….

Convenient:  In order to make the intricate details of his plots
work Morrison relies heavily on coincidence. Independently these
coincidences don’t amount to much, taken as a whole and it can border on
absurdity.

Reconning: Reconning is always dangerous, and there’s a part of me that
hates that Morrison is playing with Batman’s origin story. There’s a
much larger part of me however that is enjoying the ride.

Bottom Line: It’s Morrison, all of the normal rules apply, some
of you will love it and others will hate it. No matter the your feelings
about the story, Morrison’s run on Batman will go down as the most
significant runs on any title in some time.
