Maybe I have a knack for enjoying pain. Or maybe I am just woefully stupid. (Not surprised if it’s both now to be honest) But for some reason I had an inkling to try another issue of what could be the craziest comic ever. Neal Adams is a legend in the comic industry, you can’t question that. What you can question is his sanity, you can bet on that. More on that in a second, first let me ask some simple questions to myself.

    Was this issue crazy? Yes

    Was this issue good? No

Does the craziness save this issue? Oh my goodness gracious no.

This might be one of the worst single issue’s I’ve read this year and trust me, there are a lot of contenders for that. The major problem with this entire series is that there is no focus to it. Neal Adams clearly has a million thoughts in his head and he tries to jam pack everything in one tiny issue. You want Batman fighting cavemen with giant bats? You have it. You want Batman to have a philosophical discussion on humanity? You have too much of it. Do you want Batman’s mood to swing so rapidly you’d think he has a brain disorder? Oh you definitely see he has some type of injury to the noggin. This Batman is so crazy and so fucking stupid I wonder if Adams even remembers how to write the character. There’s also a point in this comic where Adams deliberately retreads the finale moments of last issue into the middle of this one. Why? The fuck if I know.

Then you have the art and while on paper (ha!) it looks the good old Neal Adams on closer explaining it’s all wrong. First you have an army of inkers, with clear and vast different art styles, to finish this issue for him. Bill Sienkiewicz is a great artist but he is nothing like Adams and their styles clash constantly. Sometimes these Cavemen Batman and Robin look like monkeys, the next they are standing upright like normal humans. It’s little hiccups like that, which are constant, which hamper what could be the only saving grace of the series. But as it stands it’s inconsistent, rushed, and downright confusing to follow. Just like the writing now that I think about it.

It’s obvious the people who are still reading this are in for the craziness rather then anything involving ‘quality’. Let me warn all of you who haven’t read this yet to disprove this by saying avoid this at all cost. It’s a mess of a read with Neal Adams going all over the place and the plot still hasn’t been introduced (at least in my eyes). The art could be good but with the inconsistent, and ugly, pencils and inks it’s just a mess of a book to read at. At the end of the issue Batman is confused on his whole predicament. While me and Batman have one thing in common right now we do have a difference here: I can leave, Batman can’t.

    1. Ha! Very well written review.

I haven’t read an issue of this yet. I hate to say it, but the more reviews I read of it (positive and negative), the more inclined I am to order the collection when it comes out. It just sounds so f–ing crazy and unique. No way I’d pay full price for it, though.

    2. I LOVE this series. I really think that Odyssey is one of the best Batman stories I’ve ever read, just cause every character is so M.F. crazy that anything can happen. And though yes, the art is getting sketchier as the issues progress, the art is still innovative and genius. And it’s funny how you mention how Sienkiewicz is nothing like Adams, ’cause as I was reading this issue, I was thinking of how similar the two are. All of Sienkiewicz’s work in the last 15 years has reflected Adams’ post 1980s rough style. The two are meant have extremely similar aesthetic sentiments.

All that said, I can’t blame you for hating the issue. I can see why you (and most people) would.

    3. Agreed 100%. Stupidly, I also keep buying the book…I guess for the Adams art…but the story makes no sense. Adams’s Batman acts absolutely nothing like the Batman I’ve been reading for the past 42 years.
