I think I need to read this again, but after a first pass the only phrase that comes to mind is “beautiful disaster.” I get the reason for the 3-D modelled artwork, and sometimes it’s looks very cool. However, other times it was just a damned confusing mess.

Same for the story too. Breaking the book up into chapters is actually pretty helpful, since it felt like they bounced between crazy, non-sequiter, but possibly brilliant Grant Morrison, and crazy, straight-ahead, but easily digestable Grant Morrison.

In the moments of clarity, I really liked this issue. But because the confusing parts were so obtuse and difficult to follow, it didn’t satisfy as a whole.

  1. I think this series as a whole has needed 2 or 3 reads per issue.

  2. I appreciate your perspective, but I gotta disagree with you on this one. I thought this issue was great. I didn’t have any real problems with the story. I could see how some of the technical jargon could get in the way of clarity, but I just went with it. The art was ok but appropriate for the type of story. I’m lovin’ what Morrison is doing with this title, and the twist at the end (which refers to events before, during, and after Batman R.I.P.) is pretty awesome. A really solid four star book for me because of the art (I think it could have been drawn and been just as effective with some nice coloring effects).

    • Yeah, I certainly appreciated the novelty of this issue, and the foreshadowing and references to things past, present and future were a lot of fun. I think I’m just discovering that some of Morrison’s work requires slower, more careful reading than others.

  3. Very interesting and concise review. I dropped out of this series a while back. I’m just not a Morrison kinda comic reader.
The 2-3 reads per issue and the complex ambiguities he createss….those things have been my problem with this series and a lot of Morrison’s work. Thats just really puts me off.

I think there were more creative ways to depict an all digital/internet world that what i was able to see in this artwork. Missed opportunity to blow our minds visually…something like TRON, not that art direction, but that level of thinking.
