Damian, is a given name from the Latin Damianus which is the latinisation of the Greek Δαμιανός (Damianos), derived from the Greek word damazo) “to conquer, master, overcome, tame”

Yep, that was Damian Wayne in a nutshell.

Raised, or should I say “grown”, to conquer the world but ended up conquering his own birthright and our hearts in the process.

I’m gonna miss that little fuck.

But it wasn’t always this way, when Damian first appeared on the scene he was a unlikable and pompous and pretty much a despicable character – but the more he hung around crimefighters then more he learned and grew into one himself, and the more he grew on us.

But it was when Batman (Bruce Wayne) died when Damian fully realized his potential and became Robin. Along side a new Batman (Dick Grayson) this new dynamic due would change the face of Gotham and bring a sense of awe and wonder back into the Bat World. Like Damian says in this issue, “We were the best, not matter what anyone else thinks.” And honestly, they truly were.

Morrison has been building to this moment for years and damn him if he didn’t succeed in his plan to break our hearts. He created a character whose arc is one of the best in all of comics. Damien started as a demon and ended up as an angel – something that is rare in comics where characters stick with their status quo for years, telling the same story after story, never truly growing.

Batman Inc #8 explodes right out of the gate and never slows down for one second, much like Damian, it has to keep moving or become stagnate. Damian aint going down like that. Morrison knows what he is doing and this issue reads in a flash. We know what is coming and we fucking wish the fucking comic would slow the fuck down because we don’t want to see the inevitable take place. It’s fucking brutal and when Damian and Grayson re-team up towards the end its goddamn heartbreaking.

Fuck you Grant Morrison for making Damian one of the best Robin’s ever and for making me care about the little shit more then I ever should. And fuck you Chris Burnham for drawing the best Damian Wayne out of all them – it is how I will always remember him.

Will Damian be back? To use Morrison’s own prose from Final Crisis….

“Let’s pray for a resurrection.”

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. could’nt have said it better myself.

  2. “I’m gonna miss that little fuck.” That’s what I said. Damian went from a character I only referred to as “The Hateful lil’ Shit” to one of my favorites.

    • Yep. While it sucks that Damian is gone, I gotta give it up to Morrison who had this shit planned from the start and made us all fans of Damian only to take him away – I can’t think of another time this has been done in comics. Might be a first.
