Art and cover by SAM KIETH

This arc has been great, a wonderful reminder of why Sam Kieth is so special. The art is impressionistic and unusual, with some great touches like the unique way that Kieth draws the logo on Batman's chest. Callie is basically the same female body that Keith's been drawing since The Maxx, but she brings a nice counterpoint to the usual female forms we find in comics. Her relationship with Batman is interesting, almost like an extended "meet cute" in a romantic comedy.
All that said, this issue is confusing as all hell. I guess it's over, but I'm still not sure who the killer was or if there was or was not a real monster. Was it all in some guy's head? Was Batman hallucinating? Was I? It seemed like Kieth just got bored with his monster-murder-mystery, which was strange because it was really good. Then comes the big, but inevitable, spoiler. Callie dies. She trips and breaks her neck. I had to re-read that scene almost 3 times to realize that it really happened. It seems rather WTF, but at the same time, it has a nice sudden randomness that is reminiscent of the rest of Batman's tragedies. It also gives Kieth the opportunity to draw some poignant and expressive Batman scenes as he is just as shocked as the reader. I've never really felt sorry for Batman before, but the way that Kieth draws his heartbroken and disbelieving face really got to me.
Aside from that though, the rest of the issue seemed like someone at DC told Kieth to cut it short and get the hell out of the office. Then there is the sometimes baffling, but still beautiful, art. In one scene it appears that Batman is strangling, or at least holding, two people by the neck. Then then next panel has Batman lurking on the rooftops, alone. Was that a dream? Symbolism? What?
