With a very slow week I was curious to see what I should pick up. Then lo and behold I see this cover with a 60’s Batman villain and I thought that was the comic to read. Good thing I picked this up because it’s Batman Confidential. I already mentioned it on the recent podcast discussion but I love this series. This Bat title is sort of what the Marvel Ultimate line is (or should be); a comic that retells origins or bring in new updates to characters. Then I also realised that this King Tut is a part of Batman history I’d like to forget. I hate Adam West’s Batman, I know a lot of people love it now for the camp but what that show did was just ruin the character for me.

But as I went into this comic I was really pulled into it. Sure it’s ridiculous enough we have a villain dressing up as a Eygptian King but for some reason he works here. What also makes this comic work is that this is all played seriously, and not for camp value. This King Tut is gnerally terrifying if you think about it; especially if he’s your last image before you die. I like DeFlippis’s and Weir’s take on this villain and definitely their Riddler. The Riddler has had a somewhat resurgence in the Bat Universe thanks to Paul Dini and I for one would love to see a Riddler mini down the road. This comic sort of feels like the animated series in a lot of ways by which that this is a serious villain but we dont take it too seriously cause it’s a cartoon.

The art sort of reminded me of the animated series, although not with the Bruce Timm chins in here. It’s crisp and clean with some really great use of color. For some reason pink works well here, it gives a nice creepy tone for Tut but also provides a bit more color to an other wise drab looking enviroment. The coloring is what probably sold me on this issue and I would love to see more Bowlan and Noran in future comics.

So yes even if this does carry a reminder of the awful 60’s Batman show it does a great job revamping the villain. I cant wait to see where this arc takes us and this arc reminds me again on why I love this series to begin with. Although I will say one thing; if I see even a panel with Egghead shown in full glory I will go fucking berserk!
