The Batman Beyond cartoon is one of my favorite animated series.  And this story is true enough to the series that I could hear the voice actors.  But I think one of the draws, for me, of the animated series is the way the characters move.  Something about Mcginnis in panel form didn’t excite me.  It also didn’t help that I found the black shading versus the bright pinks and purples displeasing.

The main problem, though, is that I enjoyed how Batman Beyond employed the Scooby Doo principle.  One story, you’re in, you’re out.  Yes, you get a little more enjoyment out of it if you’ve seen previous episodes, but except for a few two-parters, each episode of the show was complete.  That’s not the case here.

I do appreciate that Beechen doesn’t over-introduce anything.  The Jokerz are casually mentioned, and Amanda Waller makes an appearance without having to be Claremonted.  This does give me hopes that this may be a case of a good story that just takes me a few issues to get into.  And maybe I’ll come around to the art, too.  I hope so.  The last panel reveal shows some promise for an interesting story.
