Batman Beyond is such a fun concept that it’s great to finally see it done right in a comic book; the recent mini-series wasn’t that spectacular, but from one issue, this ongoing series seems to be taking what the mini did right and making it even better. Adam Beechen’s story follows a deranged super villain drawing the Justice League and Batman into the open, and while it all feels like set-up, it’s great to see these characters back in the world they flourish best in. Terry McGinnis is a great character and his family dynamic feels so different to the usual Batman agenda; every page featuring an interaction between him and a member of his family is pure gold, and in essence it feels like a Spider-Man comic. The art by Ryan Benjamin merges the animated style with a more streamlined approach that feels unique to this book; it feels like an adaptation of the television series, and that will draw in a lot of new readers. This lots set to be the defining moment for Batman Beyond, as it moves into the realms of an ongoing; whether or not that lasts is anyone’s guess.
