With it’s overly narrated panels, and ADD action, I found the first issue of this series a great example why Tony Daniel is known as a great artist, and not a great writer.  But with this issue, he shakes of the rookie-writer tremors and writes the best non-Dini Batman title in over a year.

A great cold open dealing with Two Face and Penguin’s gang war leads into Jason Todd’s official entrance in the fray.  And while BoC #1 suffered from every character narrating their every thought, Jason Todd gets the only narrative voice in this issue, and it works out really well.

With all its twists and spot-on uses of character this issue makes me sad that he only has one issue left.  If he Gaiman’s this series out, though, I will hunt him down and go Grant Morrison’s Joker all over his pencilling hand.

  1. Did Tim Drake really die at the end, or am I just seeing things?

  2. No One ever really "dies" right?  I mean the guy that may have killed him "died" right?

  3. I don’t know, robby, it appeared that way, but I’m inclined to agree with 01nd18’s assesstment.  He may just be gravely injured though.  You know, like he was a few issues ago when his face was horribly scarred, but miraculously healed in the next issue, which took place on the same day.
