For the first time I am really worried about this book. The moment I read the credits of this issue and noticed Patrick Gleason was not the artist for the ENTIRE issue I groaned. We’ve had an issue without Gleason but not an issue where he wasn’t the artist the entire way through. That really worries me considering his past issues of timeliness effected series he used to work on. His improvements on getting issues to look gorgeous and be on time since the New 52 really impressed me. So now seeing that he couldn’t finish an issue could be the first red flag for this series.

To be fair, Gleason does the first fifteen pages of this and they are gorgeous. If you have been reading these Batman series and have been disappointed you haven’t seen them go into space yet well this issue well relieve your worries. I would kill to see Gleason try and do a cosmic series again because he used an eclipse here for some great moments early on. But when we get back grounded in the series he can also deliver some great moments. He’s really starting to get the hang at drawing Damian as a kid instead of a midget with a big head. So when we see him sleeping with Titus it really looks adorable and not creepy. Then we have the pages drawn by a Tomas Giorello….They aren’t bad, but they certainly don’t hold a candle to Gleason. Mick Gray and John Kalisz still do the inking and coloring for these pages and it looks like Kalisz goes to a painted route for Giorello’s pencils. But his pencils just don’t work for me, especially when Damian looks like a midget with a big head again.

That’s really all I can say about this particular issue. The story is alright with Tomasi but the use of zombies is a bit groan worthy. The art is more of a factor in this issue and it is a shame Gleason could not stay for the entire time. Let’s hope this is a one time thing and Gleason can go back to doing a full issue every month consistently again.

  1. I hope Gleason can keep it up…and that this issue was a fluke. I enjoyed his art when he got the proportions on Damian correct.

  2. The art was the real draw for me on this book. That, and the family themes that were prevalent in the first arc. But like most of the New 52 I smelled doom soon after, and the book has been slowly declining ever since with shallow storytelling. Honestly, I dropped this book when I saw the word “Zombie” in its preview. Now that I hear that the art team couldn’t finish the book I’m a little relieved (a little bummed too). I think Detective is going to start taking my Batman and Robin money as long as Layman is writing it.

  3. Batman and zombies… just in time for Halloween! I was wondering where the next arc was going to go and hoping it wouldn’t be another forgettable fight against a supervillain. So I was pleasantly surprised! There were some touching father/son moments here, too. Great series, can’t wait for the next issue! Nice complement to Snyder’s Joker arc.
