I totally have figured this series out! This series isn’t just a continuation of a Grant Morrison comic. It’s actually a remake of a previous run on Batman. More specifically, this is a remake of Doug Moench and Kelley Jones Batman run! Well in tone anyways, cause we haven’t got an issue of brainwashed, government agents….yet.

I’m being dead serious here when I type this. Cause when you think about it:

Peter Tomasi’s writing is in the same vein as Moench’s. This reads very shockly and I mean that in the best way possible. This issue in particular is full of cheesy one-liners and some truly, god awful material. Again that sounds like I’m knocking the issue but I enjoyed every single minute of this. Hell, the whole Damian story line is immediately dropped for this Terminus story which should piss me off. But for some reason it doesn’t….and I have no idea why!

I’ve compared Patrick Gleason’s art to Kelley Jones a couple of times with this run. But it is amazing how you can see a similar style with both. The obvious? Their love of Batman’s cape and how long they can make it. I think Jones takes the cake when it comes to the cape cause he can make it about 60ft long when he wants too. But in this issue, his design of Batman is no slouch. But there’s more to love about Gleason’s pencils that do make it slightly better then Jone’s. It’s the incredible detail he puts into each panel and it certainly helps he has Mick Gray as an inker. It must be a fucking nightmare to ink these pencils but somehow they can do this every month. That one panel of all four Robin’s in a military propaganda-like pose is something that needs to be on a T-Shirt and quickly.

Is the writing great in this issue? Absolutely not. Tomasi is a great writer but this could be the weakest thing he’s ever written. But you know what? I just don’t find myself caring. Again, like in Doug Moench’s run, the writing has never been the strong point with this series. Clearly, the hook of this title is Gleason’s pencils and the team he works with. I love Greg Capullo, Gary Frank, and all the other DC artists on the books I read. But let’s face it: Patrick Gleason is the best artist at DC right now and I’m not afraid to make this proclamation.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. It is definitely throwback Batman, but I was bummed that the Damien storyline wasn’t drawn out more. He’s the main reason I read the book. Gleason and Gray are REALLY putting pressure in the other Bat artists to bring their A game. I was blown away with the artistic quality of this book. I have an admiration for Glapion and Gray for the time and talent it takes to ink Batman. Good review, and I agree with your grades, except the 3 for me would be rounding up.
