Batman #701
Grant Morrison/Tony Daniel
“R.I.P. The Missing Chapter, Part One: The Hole In Things”

This issue is about what happened to Batman between R.I.P. and FINAL CRISIS. R.I.P. ended with Batman and Doctor Hurt in a helicopter plummeting into the water. Therefore, this issue begins with Batman underwater, determined to survive as he always is. There’s also am ominous countdown to Omega, the incident in FINAL CRISIS where Darkseid fires his Omega Sanction at Batman, which propels him back in time. Yeah, this isn’t a good first issue if you haven’t been reading all of Grant Morrison’s stuff.

Tony Daniel draws this issue. I don’t really have a problem with his art but compared to other Morrison artists like Frank Quitely and J.H. Williams III, he doesn’t stand a chance. His art on R.I.P. was quite good but this issue just looked rushed.

The problem with this comic is that it is unnecessary. Do we really need to see what happened to Batman between these two stories? The time span is so short that the reader can deduce that nothing much happened. Morrison does hint at a few things that he has been exploring in BATMAN AND ROBIN and RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE but that still doesn’t make this issue very important… yet. It’s an entertaining story but Morrison and Daniel have done better.

Story: 3 - Good

  1. Okay… this is my first review on iFanboy. I guess I will need to figure out the formatting next time.
