We're now in round two of Batman RIP as we see as Batman slips further and further downward to where Bruce and Batman can no longer co-exist. What if Bruce is crazy? What if the Black Glove is Batman's own doing? What if people realize that the huge and elaborate Batcave was built with just a crazy millionare and an elderly British butler? All these questions plus a Gargoyle Man, a superhero tries to cook dinner, and European crimnals conspire to beat an old manservant. Who could you go wrong?!
The big baddies of the story are, of course, the members of the Black Glove, a mix between the Hellfire Club and the Village People. The goal is to take a noble and idealistic soul, Batman, and utterly crush it in a kind of twisted performance piece. The Quasimodo guy doesn't think it's possible, yet Dr. Hurt (the supposed leader so far) thinks the trigger he planted in Batman years ago will be sufficient to destroy him.
Meanwhile, Batman prepares to introduce his new girl, Jezebel Jet, to the Batcave. I don't know if Grant intended this but when Batman tells Alfred he's going to cook Jezebel dinner first, he's in costume. When they later show up in the cave, he's STILL in costume... which seems to imply that Bruce cooked a romantic meal and served it up to his girl DRESSED AS BATMAN. That's just too funny right there. "Here's your casserole, my love." "Why--why didn't you change?" "Psh! I'm the G-dd-mn Batman!" Heh, aw, Bruce...
Anyways, Jezebel starts questioning Bruce's logic and sanity at being Batman, even saying he could wipe her country's debt with the money he spends on maintaining the Batcave. Jez even wonders if the Black Glove is Bruce himself, subconsciously punishing himself for all the anguish he's inflicted upon himself. In a way she has a point, Batman IS Bruce Wayne's refusal to just deal with his parents dying. Nevertheless, Batman DOES do a world of good for people, be it the foiling of the Joker, a random mugger, or the occasional alien menace with the JLA. But is all that worth the price of Bruce's sanity? SHOULD Bruce be Batman or just move on and choose other avenues to help the world? Hurm.
Before we can really mull things over, the Black Glove syndicate strikes, setting off a major raid of the cave that leaves Bruce down and Alfred the victim of an angry deformed monk. Who knows how things will tie themselves off, but so far, this story is getting really interesting. The psychology and interplay between Batman and Jez is interesting. The subplot with the "truth" about the Waynes being drugged out freaks seems kind of out-of-place, but it's Morrison, so who knows what could happen. The villains actually seem threatening for just having got on the scene and then there's the inevitability of the Joker. The art remains good and fresh as always with Tony Daniel. That was a real solid issue.
