What a great time to be collecting comics. I wonder if the impending doom of the Earth on December 21st 2012 as anything to do with all these writers and artists delivering some of the most enjoyable comics to be produced and a monthly basis since, well fuck, since I can’t remember when. Books like Uncanny X-Force, Daredevil, Animal Man, Wolverine and The X-Men, The Walking Dead, and Batwoman are just a few off the top of my head that I can think of where the creative team is bringing their “A” game with each and every issue.

This is a new golden age happening right before our eyes. And by golden age I don’t mean “this is your grandpa’s comic” sorta way. No, I mean a golden age of storytelling and one that will be looked back on with as much reverence as the comic book years of 1985-1986 when Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns changed the game. We will one day look back at 2011-2012 and say, “goddamn, that was an awesome time!”

And helping make these years even awesomer (yeah I know it’s not a word but it’s my review and I can say what the fuck I want) is the current Batman team of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. I could go on for days about the awesometivity (see. Whatever the fuck I want) of these two dudes, but you’ve heard it all before – and it’s all true. These guys are giving us THE Batman book of the 21 century. If you are not currently reading Batman what the hell is wrong with you? Stop reading this stupid review and go buy the motherfucker.

Like Watchman and Dark Knight before it, Snyder’s and Capullo’s Batman is a game changer. Sure these are delicate times in the world of comics – that impending doom I mentioned above looms over the industry like a vulture just waiting to pick the bones – but there are also comics like this. Comics which delight and inspire us all and make it all worth it.

(I know this isn’t much of a proper review of Batman #5 but hey, it’s really really good. Go buy it!)

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. Awesome review. I couldn’t agree more. Uncanny X-Force, Daredevil, Animal Man, Wolverine and The X-Men, and Batwoman are some of my fav’s as well. Ive also been really enjoying Swamp Thing. This is the Batman comic that everyone has been waiting for. i have been hooked since day 1.

    • Thanks man. I feel pretty lucky to be reading comics at this point in time right now. I mean seriously check it out: Wade’s Daredevil is brillant and a must read, Remender’s Uncanny X-Force is some of the most tense action comics I’ve read in a long time, Animal Man lives in a world between superheroes and horror comics which is rarely done right but here it is outstanding, and Batwoman? Well the art there speaks for itself – masterful and breathtaking.

You cannot go wrong right now if you are a comic book fan!
