This is the first “Batman” comic I’ve picked up since the New 52 started, and it doesn’t disappoint. I bought it because it advertises that “the next major storyline begins here” involving the Joker’s return. I was excited to find some hints foreshadowing the Joker, although nothing in this issue indicates the he is waiting in the wings. Still, even though this book was not what I expected at all, the story I got was fantastic. I can’t wait to see more stories with the Caped Crusader, and more stories including the new character who is introduced.

Rather than focus on huge events that change the world (as comics sometimes do when they strive for greatness), this issue centered on two new characters, put them in a small, personal story, and made it a great issue. This story is not too dark, not too campy, and is a great stand-alone issue, but I imagine DC and Scott Snyder are setting up a character to replace one who is missing (or changed) in the New 52–and should satisfy a great many fans.

This is a pleasant story with a warm resolution, and based on rumors for the upcoming Joker storyline may be the last such story for a while. If you have any interest in the World’s Greatest Detective, take a chance on this issue.

Story: 5 - Excellent
