I’ve been turning to BPRD more and more recently as I grow tired of the superhero books that can feel like a rehashing of the same tricks and stories, again and again. That said, BPRD has felt fresh, new, imaginative and different and keeps the hope alive for me each week at my LCS. I was loving Acudi, the last BPRD artist, but this guy, Harren, is one of the most amazing artists I’ve EVER seen. Saying he put out a five-star effort almost doesn’t do the visuals justice. Great inking is a big part of the success. Detail in a non photo-realistic cartoonistic style that I personally love. At one point I was looking at the blades of grass, vivid in the foreground, and sketchy in the background — simple things that make the image jump off the page and pulled me right into the story.

On the other hand, the story was creative in it’s biforcated, two timeline structure. But I felt that there was an over use of the narrator telling the background of the story and not enough character to character dialogue, which took me out of the story a bit. Seeing as it is a two issue arc, that is a lot of set up for a short story. Four starts though, nonetheless.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
