This is the perfect example of a comic with a great writer on board but a horrible artist as his partner.

Fabian Nicieza doesn’t blow everyone’s mind, I know, but he is totally making this new Azrael work for me. Here he brings up a HUGE plot point into Michael Lane’s life and it totally makes a left turn towards the end. If you’ve been following this character since the mini last year, then this issue will be a bit of a shocker. Sure the character is new-ish but he has been established well into the Batverse and I think Nicieza has done well writing the character.

The same cannot be said for the truly, horrible (no other word for it really) art by Ramon Bachs. I can’t take this anymore. Who thought this guy could draw!? His panel layouts are good enough but the actual character models and faces…..Seriously some of the worst faces I’ve seen in a comic. Is that suppose to be Dick Grayson? Cause he looks nothing like it! He does horrible children designs and Damien literally changes faces every panel. Then you have the stuff of Batman just standing around, god he looks so awful! Azrael, not surprisingly, looks pretty good panel to panel; but mostly everyone else is just a mess to look at.

I want to drop this book, but for the life of me I can’t. Because Nicieza is doing a great job writing the character and he has become one of my new favorite heroes to read about. I just pray that Bachs is somehow off this title in the near future, cause it’s really hard to recommend this series with this poor showing. Seeing the solicts for future issues, that sadly isn’t going to change anytime soon.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. I can’t agree more on the art.  I thought it was stronger than it has been, but still unacceptable.  Between Damian’s gigantic head and the stiffest action I’ve ever seen, I can’t wait until Bachs is off.

I don’t remember his art being this awful on Red Robin or World’s Finest, so if he’s trying something new, he’d better knock it off.
