When it started I was incredibly underwhelmed by Avengers Prime; I’ve never been a huge Alan Davis fan and it felt like Bendis was writing a throwback-style comic book for the sake of it, but now that we’ve reached the conclusion of this mini-series I’m delighted that it not only improved upon a lacklustre first issue, but also developed into one of the best Avengers-related mini-series for quite some time. Bendis understands how to write Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and Thor effectively, and this issue is a perfect example of how they work well together or as part of a team. The friendship within the pages feels ancient, and works to the issue’s advantage as we watch them conquer evil in their quest to return home. It ends the way you’d expect it to, but that isn’t a disappointment; it’s a delight. Alan Davis’ art, meanwhile, truly blew me away this issue; every page was filled with intricate images, bursting with detail and sheer economy of style and power – the action scenes were intense and adventurous and by the end of the issue I found myself declaring, for the first time, to be an Alan Davis fan.
