Avengers Academy is one of those books that I wasn't sure of in the beginning. But I have to say it very quickly became one of my favorites, and this issue is keeping up with that trend.
What I love about this book right now is that all the characters are so well written. Not all of the team is likable, but they are all believable as people (aside from the superpowers stuff, obviously). They make mistakes that are ones that you would see someone that age making, both the senior members and the students, and their hopes and fears about the future are all very realistic. The characters are fleshed out enough that we mostly know who they are today. Watching them continue to develop is something I look forward to each month. Christos Gage is doing an excellent job with this group of people.
Last month left them at the hands of Korvac, as the only standing Avengers left to put him down before he enslaves the universe (typical, right?). However, the story does not go exactly the way you expect it to, the students are shown their full true potential, like we were promised last month. Through the twists and turns of the events we learn something about every one of the students.
The last two pages of this book succeeded at their goal, for me, and really shows skill in both the artistry and storytelling.
I love the art in this book, I wouldn't say it's the best I have seen, but really good art, in my opinion, doesn't make you think too much about it while you are reading. It just helps present the story without distracting you from it. This does that beautifully, the art is not bad in any way, but beautiful, but not so outrageous that you think too much about it, perfect. The only bad thing I have to say about the whole book is that I was kind of shocked at the cover to find out that Hazmat and Finesse are twins in the future??? (j/k)
This is my pick of the week, and I haven't even finished reading all my comics from this week, I am that sure about it.
Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

“Avengers Academy” and “X-Force” are my two favorite comics on the stands today.
