  1. Err, JRJR did a stint on Uncanny X-Men in the EARLY ’90s. His run as artist during the ’80s was much better, due in large part to vintage Claremont on writing duties. But until now I’ve actually heard his ’90s work routinely criticized, because he hadn’t perfected his blocky style yet.

I do see the parallel between what could happen with the Avengers line and what happened with the X-titles ten years ago. But JRJR wasn’t really a part of that X-era. He had left like four years before oversaturation and overlapping. Unless you don’t think the Blue/Gold era was good. I think most people thought those years were pretty good. It was still the crest of the X-Men’s popularity, and titles like Peter David’s (first run on) X-Factor and Alan Davis’s Excalibur were keeping the whole X-line quite diverse.

In contrast, it was the late-’90s when the titles started REALLY slipping, and so did sales. There’s kind of a parallel with that stuff to what’s going on with Avengers, because month in and month out, aside from #1s and specials, Avengers books aren’t regular first-place sellers like they were a few years ago, when New Avengers was consistently the best-selling regular comic. I see your points, though, and I agree for the most part, but I don’t associate JRJR with the bad era of X-Men. It was not the best era of X-Men, but still pretty good.
