Jason Aaron is really testing my tolerance of the whole “Origin” storyline; this is his second book in the last month to feature something that ties directly into that horrible story, which in many ways is a good thing because he takes this horrible idea and turns it into a fantastic instalment of a fantastic story. To be honest, while this was absolutely incredible, and is certainly one of the best things around right now, it was the weakest issue so far and the handling of the “Origin” tie-in wasn’t handled nearly as well as in the most recent issue of Wolverine’s solo book. Basically, Jason Aaron is just having a lot of fun with this title; it’s an incredibly complex and twisted view of classic Silver Age superhero comics with ridiculous villains, insane concepts and wonderfully energetic executions. The characters of Wolverine and Spider-Man are written perfectly, as Aaron fills them to the brim with gruff brutality and goofy quips, respectively. The art by Adam Kubert remains as fluid and detailed as usual; the majority of the issue is done in his regular style, while the painted effect placed over the top of the “Origin” section of the issue feels as though those pages could be inserted into that mini-series, regardless of their effect on its continuity. The big reveal of an old foe returning at the issue’s climax wasn’t quite as powerful as it could have been, with the concept feeling obvious only a page beforehand, and the character in question not feeling like a particularly engaging threat given the circumstances the duo have found themselves in so far.
