Ivan Reis needs to draw sharks the rest of his life. Or how about a comic full of wildlife?

This was a pretty good issue for Geoff Johns. He’s able to mix in an in-depth origin for Arthur Curry and add in some teases for the next arc. I will say though that he did too much exposition towards the end when this guy explains Atlantis and the power struggle. I guess he had too put a lot of action in the first half. Then again with this exposition out of the way maybe we’ll get a more action oriented story arc like we’ve seen the last time.

But again: If you don’t think Ivan Reis (and Joe Pardo) is a great artist then you must be crazy. All you need for proof is the first half of this issue alone. Fantastic under water panels leading up to Arthur fighting a shark. I’ll never get tired repeating how awesome that fight is. Oh and you get a fantastic finale with a double page spread of Atlantis. That should be a freaking poster. Hell, every single panel should be a poster at this rate.

Maybe this isn’t the best #0 issue for DC but Geoff Johns makes it entertaining enough for it to be fun. But then again when you have gorgeous artwork by Ivan Reis in this issue you gotta ask yourself: “Who the hell cares on the writing when you got this artwork to gaze at?”

Story: 4 - Very Good
