I’m coming at this having never read Animal Man before now.

Even so, I felt while reading that much of what I liked about this issue probably pre-dated Jeff Lemire putting pen to paper.

Animal Man’s world and mythos seems pretty bad ass and well-defined, and I’m invested enough to stick with the series for at least an arc. Steve Pugh’s art, particularly on the menagerie of creatures comprising the Red and Green, is highly awesome. What Lemire has done so far seems a little workman-like, though. Laying out someone else’s world now, so that he can start to tell his own story later. I’m optimistic for this to be good, but I don’t know that I’ve seen anything yet, story-wise, other than just not dropping the ball. An accomplishment in it’s own right.
