Marvel has devoted a lot of energy recently to promoting the fact that there are women involved in comics.  They’ve created titles with terrible puns (Her.oes….really?), and anthologies of mediocre work by otherwise talented creators.

I wish instead of forcing the gender issue by making specific “female titles”, they would have just let female creators tell interesting stories.  If they did, they might have ended up with less of the silly “Girls Comics” and more books that resembled this.

Jen Van Meter’s Black Cat may not go down in history as The Greatest Comic Ever Written, but it was a goddamned joy to read.  It fits perfectly into the slot between The Gauntlet and Grim Hunt.  And I hope it earns Van Meter a seat at The Spider Trust table because she tells a great story here.

Javier Pulido’s art struck me as reminiscent of Darwyn Cooke’s early Catwoman work.  And that’s a great association for me.

There’s also a prologue for Grim Hunt at the back, which has me very excited for that issue, which is only a few comics further down my stack. (so, read this one first)

  1. Glad to hear the favorable review.  I was planning on getting this for the Conner covers, but this will make it all the more worth it.
