Wow. Amazing Spider-Man has just been top-notch lately, and even more so since issue #600 and the return of Mary Jane.
The theme of this issue is spending time in someone else's shoes, and who better to do that than the Chameleon. In case you missed it last issue, the Chameleon has taken over the identity of Peter Parker in order to find the top secret anti-terrorism headquarters. After spending about 10 minutes in Peter's room, he's thrust into the drama of his life.
The Chameleon refers to the people who's lives he borrows as his "faces," and remarks that he tries to have as much impact on their lives as possible. Its interesting that, because he doesn't have to worry about what these people think of him (or the person he's disguised as), he's free to be brave, to stand up to those that the "face" otherwise wouldn't, and to say things that the "face" otherwise would be too embarrassed to say. This is especially true when he sees Flash Thompson. While Peter may have put Flash's actions in high school behind him, all the Chameleon has to go on is Flash's note in a high school yearbook. Since Flash has come back from Iraq with both his legs amputated, Chameleon Peter takes this opportunity to point out that he's now the puny one.
The Chameleon does make one pertinent observation about Parker's life. In all of Spider-Man, Peter has been kind of a dorky guy, who like all dorky guys, tends to have problems with the ladies. And yet, "Does Parker know anyone who isn't a stunningly beautiful woman?"
