Wow. This is why I love comics. I love being absorbed into an emotional story both visually and through the storytelling.
As no surprise to anyone by now, this is a stand alone issue focusing on Flash Thompson. I really liked how this story unfolded like an episode you would see on TV and that is due to Guggenheim's ability to craft a story in episodic TV fashion. Going in, I knew it would be a stand alone story focusing on Flash but I didn't imagine the great parallels that would be drawn between being a war hero and Spider-Man.
What I liked:
- Laughed out loud at the "So, why do people call you Flash" flashback panel as Flash is talking to the General. Hilarious.
- I loved the parallels made throughout the story back to Spider-Man. That's right --- real hero moments as an analogy for Spider-Man and not the other way around as we are so used to in comics.
- I really wasn't expecting the last page and the reveal at the end...that's how good the story was. I am usually one to pick things out like that, but I was so caught up in the storytelling that I didn't even want to think ahead.
- The Letters page. Seriously - I never really READ the letters page. I usually glance at it and pick up on some key words or jokes and move on. This one I read word for word as it gave the story about how this story came about.
Overall just a really great issue. I really hope Marvel or SOMEONE is sending copies of this to our troops overseas to let them know that we love comics because of real heroes like them.
Thanks for letting me have the opportunity to share my words with you.
