You know, I think sometimes, Fanboys lose focus. I give credit to the iFanboys, whose POTW criteria is simply, “Which issue was the best issue you read this week, for whatever reason?” I think it’s true that sometimes, Fanboys expect too much out of comics, or movies, or TV, or whatever. “Secret Invasion” has not lived up to a lot of people’s expectations, it would seem. And I’ll be the first person to say that I had higher hopes for this series, I think, than what it has ultimately been. But I’ll also repeat a theory I’ve had for awhile: this story is an “Avengers” story, not a Marvel Universe story, and should have taken place solely within the “Avengers” titles as Bendis had initially wanted. When Marvel editorial co-opted the event and expanded it into an “EVENT”, it turned out there just wasn’t enough meat on the bone to sustain something of that size. So unlike, say, “Final Crisis”, which seems to truly be a DCU “EVENT”, “Secret Invasion” has felt at times like it was being streeeetched into something it was not initially designed to be. Still, “which issue was the best issue you read this week, for whatever reason?” Clearly, for me, it was this one. The art? Gorgeous. And the action? Hella fun, well paced, well scripted. Every character that has a “moment” in this issue, that “moment” rings true. Great moments for Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ares, Thor, Cap, Norman Osborn, The Hood… the list goes on. I have been enjoying “Secret Invasion”, but not as much as I had dared to dream. That’s okay, though, because hey, it’s just a story, and it’s a good story, and it’s a fun story, and clearly “Secret Invasion #7” was the best issue I read this week, for whatever reason. Sometimes comics are about deeper, intelligent, adult issues. And sometimes comics are about grown people in costumes beating the snot out of each other. And that’s okay.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
