Whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa. What a minute. What the hell is going on here? This has nothing to do with the story... which is actually pretty awesome, but Pete's opening inner monologue: "Ah, right. He doesn't remember anymore. He has NO idea I'm Spidey. Nobody does. Everything WE did is still up and running. I'm safe."
Huh? 'He doesn't remember anymore'? Since when does Pete remember that Norman Osborn should or should not have remembered? Now, correct me if I'm wrong (and that's not rhetorical, somebody please do) but didn't Peter's memory get wiped along with everyone else when One More Day ended? And I could be wrong, but I'm assuming the WE in 'Everything WE did is still up and running' is he and Mary Jane. So, if he still remembers OMD happened, wouldn't he just be able to go be with Mary Jane again?
And if Peter knows what everyone else SHOULD know, (and I'm guessing MJ might, too, since he said WE instead of I, but that's just speculation), then he still remembers his entire life prior to OMD. So, um, what exactly was the downside to his deal with the devil? Sure, he's not with MJ right now, but it's not like the devil killed her. She's hanging around. They can get back together at any time. Unless the satanic world wide memory wipe came with a restraining order, I guess. Who knows the rules of that deal, anymore? Apparently everything I thought about it is wrong, and the only thing it accomplished was making Peter single without a death or divorce.
Alright, whatever. At this point I need the actual devil to show up and offer to erase OMD from everyone else's memory. It just doesn't make any sense at this point, and I'm sorry, Marvel, but it never will now. It's a little bit tough, but as far as I'm concerned Spidey continuity started last issue. That's the only way I can force my brain to accept this. But it's something I'm willing to do, because I really enjoyed this issue. Osborn is good and creepy. The Thunderbolts are fun. And I'm willing to give Anti-Venom a chance, even though its the worst name ever.
One last note on this OMD thing. I get them wanting to make Spidey single. I don't agree with it, but I understand it. Not that Pete needs to be a swinging bachelor and/or womanizer (even though we know his relationships won't fully develop... marriage is out of the question for him), but some stories can be limiting when he's always worried about someone hurting his wife. But, um, now he's just worrying about people hurting his elderly aunt? That's better, or more relatable... how? Just out of a bit of personal interest/curiosity, if anyone reads this review, could you just leave in the comments whether you'd rather read Spider-Man dropping whatever he's doing to rush out and save his wife or his elderly aunt? Thanks.

Well, his concern for Aunt May is classic Spidey. But I take your point. I guess I’d say I’d rather not see him doing any more damsel in distress stuff with MJ either though. One of the things I dislike about the movies is that MJ is essentially just a horror-movie scream prop for all the action sequences.
Hey! I wonder what Spidey’s brilliant plan was, if he hadn’t gotten derailed by Venom?
You know, I didn’t even catch that little bit in the monologue, now I’m wondering how I missed it. I have been a really big fan of the BND issues, but I hate when they remind me how awful OMD was. And to screw up how their own reference works! 🙂
Also, I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who thinks Anti-Venom is an awful, awful name. The weak story around him isn’t helping matters any, but couldn’t they have started with a cooler name?
That monologue ruined this issue for me. It had better mean something else.
I beleve a lot of ‘Heroes’ that are married and/or have living relatives go rushing off to save them. Supes has Lois/Jimmy, Hulk had Betsy/Rick, Hal has his brother and family, for a long time Robin was always in so much shit that they used to call him "The Boy Hostage", etc etc. HECK! It could be argued that EVERY Fantastic Four issue has this "stakes raising" device built in to it.
I dont know how to feel about these last 2 issues of Spidey. At the same time that I think they are kind of hokey, I find myself entertained by it, and I always find myself looking forward to seeing what will happen next.
As far as Anti-Venom goes, I am just as conflicted. My immediate reaction was "GACK!" followed by "NEAT-O!" I mean they actually made me pull for Eddie, but is this what we really need?
I would MUCH rather see them wrap up some of these plot threads. Like the Spidey serial killer running around. Its an ok idea (and has been done before to varying degrees), but not for as many issues as they have dragged it out for.
