Ugh…I knew it was coming to this….I’ve tried my hardest, I really have…to avoid anything Spider-Man related since the OMD debacle. But since this arc has been heavily promoted and the previews show some really good art. I guess I have no choice but to read this and maybe feel that this Brand New Day actually means anything.

Now I know these characters somewhat, I’ve read wikipedia, I know who the new villians are. These new villians are really bad in my eyes; the best they could come up with is a cocaine messed up freak, a daredevil (sadly not the cool one), and a guy who tricks out cars….seriously? But still we’re basically not showing any of these new villians and focusing on the better ones like Mr. Negative and Menace; although the latter is a lame Goblin clone. But once you throw in the Thunderbolts, well your gonna get a big cluster(you know what) of craziness in the title.

Here’s my problem with BND to begin with, continuity. Now I know this isnt titled a ‘recon’ but basically why is Matt Gargon still with Venom? Or why is Norman Osborne may or may not remember who Parker is? First off, Eddie Brock was Venom long before Scorpion and Osborne was dead for the majority of the time OMD erased the history of Spider-Man. The biggest answer lies in that Joey Q didnt account for that these two are in Thunderbolts right now and it would’ve really screwed Ellis if suddenly his two best characters are off his run.

But these annoying tibits aside I try to read the title for what it is and it isnt a bad title. Mr. Negative is a good alternative to Kingpin and the emmergence of Eddie Brock is somewhat pretty shocking. (Although if you saw the paragraph above you know that the continuity bug is biting me in the leg). It’s still not perfect cause I just dont care about Peter’s new involvment in the series. Not being with the Bugle and trying to scrounge for money is still a nagging issue. It’s why I loved JMS’s run cause he was trying to advance Peter job wise and made him more of an adult.

Sadly, Joey Q does not seem to like us. Yes the hatred for him is so deep that we think of him as a dictator at Marvel. No hyperbole needed but if Joey Q is the spawn of satan then he would build a prision for all of us who hate OMD and replace concrete with his own blood: that’s how much he hates you!!! Seriously though, I dont have a problem with the Q man has most people do. He’s a nice guy and he tried really hard to make this (cough)not a recon(cough) work. But sadly he had to bring an attitude with explanations and how the status quo changes characters and now he’s the poster boy for a bad editor.

Marvel has seriously tried hard to make this BND work, but coming off from a guy who has been indifferent with this decision it’s hard to really care for this run. Sure it looks pretty and the story seems interesting. But Peter Parker was actually turning into a responsible adult and actually had problems and needed to take care of his wife and mom. It’s a refreshing pace from him trying to get pictures and say snippy comebacks to his adversaries. But Marvel thought this was a wrong direction and did a complete 180 turn to make Parker what he was from the 1960’s to 1990’s. Since character development seems to be lacking it’s just hard to really care for this title anymore.

I’ll most likely pick up the next issue for this arc….But dont try and think that I’ll stick threw this run. Now if you excuse me I’m going to read a flawed, but interesting trade of Spider-Man where he has totem powers.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I liked this issue a lot more than you did.  Granted, I never read anything before BND and I’m sure reading years of a certain story and having someone hit the rewind button must’ve been annoying.

I also think it’s unfair to write off the entire reboot of this series considering you’ve only read one issue.  You should really try to enjoy it because you’ve really been missing out on a really great series. (The Marcos Martin arc?) It’s a lot of fun.

  2. Did I miss something? Would taking away the marriage and making peter and MJ just a couple that lived together and then broke up in anyway affect Normans resurrection or Gargan having the symbiote?
