I'm not someone who thinks Superman is inherently boring, but his attitude in this issue shows why people complain about him being a "Big Blue Boy Scout."
He leaps in front of a blast to prevent one Doomsday from killing another Doomsday. He then pretentiously explains that the other Doomsday doesn't get to be the judge of who lives and dies and says that Doomsday has the chance for redemption. I half-expected the next scene to be Superman trapping a spider in his apartment under a glass and then finding a nice habitat for it outside.
The dialogue is all over the map. We get Steel calling the uber-Doomsday an "end-of-level boss" (Steel plays video games?), Superboy referring to his tactile telekinesis as his TTK, and a ton of science-ish jargon to get you to look past the stuff that doesn't make any sense.
They also explain to you why there's no way to stop mass destruction, then they pretty easily stop it, leaving you with an "Oh. Well, that happened" feeling. At the end of it all, I was glad this version of the DC universe is ending so I can try forgetting this ever happened.
It's too bad that Cornell dropped the ball this issue, as the art was great. Kenneth Rocafort draws some beautiful stuff, especially the shots of Lois and Jimmy waiting for destruction, Superman valiantly pushing off the ship from crashing into Earth, the impact itself, and a weakened Superman stumbling ashore.
I can't recommend this issue, but it's worth flipping through to see some pretty pictures and how Rocafort tries to deal with drawing different versions of the already-goofy Doomsday in a story where these Doomsdays aren't even painted as threats.
