Couple of weeks ago I thought I try out Rucka's Batwoman title. It certainly beat my expectations and it made me go from "I will never go near this" to "This might be very good in trade". So for the last couple of months I have avoided anything Superman because of the lazy attempts of a crossover with 'New Krypton'. Here we have yet another try for me to get into Rucka's good side. Will this end up me liking Action Comics with a new set of characters? Or did I do a good thing by avoiding the new Superman status quo?
Apparently this new team of Nightwing and Flamebird are being attacked by the government. I have no idea why; so I set up my own scenario where the two Kryptonians set a bug on Twitter and gave General Lane a massive headache all day. So the two heroes duke it out with these frankenstein like monsters and eventually get away. Oh and there are these two other Kryptonians just speaking like their on the set of 'The Notebook' and I have no idea why I should care. The issue ends with the latter couple getting captured by some....thing with tattoos on her face and it's a win for the bad guys? I have no idea.
Okay so obviously I have no idea what's going on with this series right now. But that's suppose to be okay right? There's a bunch of people saying you could jump right into a comic and just read the damn thing. I did that, and I can say I didn't like it. Possibly because the 'heroes' have the personality of sticks but partly because this issue is in fucking translations most of the time! I'm fine with people speaking in foreign tounges cause it breaks the norm with comics. But to have it set in the font of 'Webdings' it seems like Rucka kinda lost the plot a bit. Mostly though it's just because I don't care about these characters. I know this is called 'Action Comics' and not 'Superman Action Comics' but this just doesn't feel right. It's been a Superman title for the majority of it's run so I just can't get used to this new team. Also, I just don't care what General Lane is planning. He's been brooding in that bunker for almost a year now. When the hell is this master plan going into action? What is he Cobra Commander?
Finally there is a co-feature with Captain Atom and to say James Robinson went off the deep end is not saying much. Why the hell is Atom in the middle of Helm's Deep and what the fuck is going on? Is he having a quantum leap moment? Why isn't anything explained!? You can't just set something like that up and not give any reason for it. Considering a good half of this has no word balloons make it even more frustrating. I've only read a handful of DC comics that have these co-features but it's safe to say this is the worst of the bunch. More and more it just seems like James Robinson is going the route of Jeph Loeb. The only difference between the two is that I hated Robinson before his descent into comic hell.
So it's safe to say I will avoid most of these Superman titles for the rest of run. Although I enjoyed the Supergirl issues I read and I want to see where that is going. Shocking isn't it? A Supergirl comic might be the best of the bunch right now. Experiment failed for me this week.

Totally agree with you on the back-up. After hearing nothing but praise of Starman for years (I’ve never read it) I’m still waiting to see something (Superman related or not) from Robinson that isn’t terrible.
This arc has been good overall & you being so confused is because it’s like you’re starting to watch a movie from halfway through it — of course you will be lost. I’d recommend this arc in trade or chasing down the issues, it’s been solid.
@Wade: Isn’t there a group of people that say we can read a comic no matter where the story is at?
I think Conor abides to that sometimes. Not to be a name dropper, just I remember him defending that notion. So obviously that doesn’t work here. Yes the Captain Atom story is a long line of crappy Robinson stories that people still somehow like.
@TNC – part of the notion, at least from what I remember Josh saying, is that you need to stick with it. You need to read several issues and eventually you’ll catch up. The point was that in doing so you’ll understand the basic goingons and characters of a series with hundreds of issues.
