I never liked Superman.

Sure, Superman 335 was one of my first comic books (which I probably read over 100 times) and I loved the Christopher Reeve Superman movies.  But you see, Superman as a comic never worked before for me because Superman is not cool.  Superman comics never had the excitement I remembered.  How could it be a fun as I remember?  No, I don’t read Superman.

Well, I did read Action Comics 868 by Geoff Johns, art by Frank and Sibal.  Huh….. this is good.  I mean, really good. This is exactly like I remember Superman being, but I know deep down inside I haven’t read a Superman story this good in a long time (maybe others have, but I haven’t been reading Superman for a long time).  I think this is the start (or the middle) of something really good that I need to start reading.

One thing I really dug was the fact that there were a lot of panels with no dialog, but they conveyed more information and emotion than a half dozen pages in a usual comic.  The art really did a good job of telling the story.  It is a great partnership.

This is part three of a story arc, and I could jump in with no problem.  If you are like me, and you haven’t been reading Superman because you “don’t read Superman,” maybe you should read Action Comics, because this Superman is better than you thought it could be.  This comic made me remember when I loved Superman.

Happy reading, it was a good week.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. Yeah, I don’t read Superman. Don’t even like the character. Yet, hearing about this online from the ifanboys combined with the masterful art of Gary Frank convinced me to flip through it at the LCS. Took me about 30 seconds to get me to buy it, and now it’s at the top of my stack. Very nice review, and I agree wholeheartedly.
