Admittedly, it is my heart and not my head giving Action Comics four stars this week. My heart is really hoping that Grant Morrison can catch lightening in a bottle twice and write another Superman story that makes all the character’s detractors sit up and take notice. I’m not saying that I want to read All-Star Superman Volume 2, but I am looking for a little bit of the same magic that made me care about this character more than even Christopher Reeves could.

The pieces are all there in this story. Clark is young and idealistic and possessed of all the naive self-assurance that is requisite for those who want to change the world. As a reader, that makes me smile because I can remember feeling that way a time or two in my life. But my head is telling me that this issue just felt fast and kind of jumpy, like things were being rushed towards an endpoint 2 pages further in the future. (Or maybe the ads every other page turn just pulled me out more than usual.)

So for now, I’ll say that in spite of this issue’s shortcomings, I believe I’m going to love this version of Clark/Superman. And as with many things Grant Morrison, I’m hoping that a faithful reader’s patience will not go unrewarded.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
