Around when SDCC came around, a little trailer came out for a comic book film. No I’m not talking about the Avengers…..or Green Lantern….or Captain America….or Walking Dead….or…..you know, let me post it for you.

It was for ‘The Goon’, which is printed by Dark Horse and has had great success as an indie book. The trailer suprised me for two reasons:
1) How amazing it looked. Hell it looked better then most films that come out today.
2) I couldn’t believe I haven’t read a Goon book yet. It is so reguarded by everyone who reads it and it always looked Hellboy-lite to me. So why haven’t I read it yet? Well luckily Dark Horse made the situation much easier by re-releasing the #1 issue for a dollar. So hey, there is a first time for everything. Is The Goon really that good?…
Oh my god, I haven’t had so much fun reading comics since….well maybe since Batman and Robin started! There is so much to this comic that even as a #1 issue it feels dense. A great mix of drama, humor, and fantastic artwork makes this a must buy.
I’ve read a few things with Eric Powell as the talented, but I never realized just how amazing he is as a writer and artist till now. Every single page of this is gold: whether it be the black and white flashback (which looks painted in a way) or full on full technicolor. Every page has something for you whether you’re looking for a serious moment or just plain silliness. I wasn’t expecting the exploding orangutans let’s put it that way!
I know this is a reprint and I now know I need to go find the trades to this wonderful series. But, I think even as a reprint and for only a buck….this is one hell of a comic for the week. Better then anything else I read this week that’s for sure. If anything else, this book makes me even more excited for the film to come out. If you aren’t reading The Goon, like I was, then you need to pick this #1 issue up. Trust me, you’re going to have a ball.
Art: 5 - Excellent
I recommend your first trade be China Town. I think it might be an OGN.
Good stuff.
A few years ago, I think Dark horse reprinted this as a 25 cent issue(it may have been a different issue, i’m not really sure). Anyway…my point is that a few years ago, this issue and the Goon series as a whole, literally got me back into reading comics!
@scorpion masada: Chinatown is now considered the 6th trade in the Goon collection. But the beauty of Goon is you can really start anywhere in the series. In fact, I might start lending out to friends in different orders, and see if that has any factor in their enjoyment.
I think I read all the trades 0-5 and up to Chinatown.
I don’t think reading them out of order should matter too much from what I recall . . .
