Pick of the Week Podcast

Pick of the Week #411 – Amazing X-Men #1

Show Notes

After the 5th week last week, comics are back in full force, and we’re here to talk about fun, and the culmination of Stan Lee’s fantasy. Not that one. We’re not even sick of talking about new, excellent Marvel #1 issues, so off we go. Josh Flanagan will try very hard to get on topic, with little success.

  1. I’m really missing the pulllist on iFanboy. I know it’s not feasible to have it return and I’m using the pulllist feature on comixology at the moment. I find it really cumbersome to use compared to the excellent layout of the old iFanboy one. Does anyone now of a better alternative more closely resembling iFanboy’s old format?

  2. My pick of the week was tie between Ghosted and Quantum & Woody. I literally laugh out loud every page of Q&W. That book is hilarious. Are you guys reading Ghosted and Sheltered? Both Image titles came out at the same time while back and I’m loving both titles very much.

  3. I think my only ‘popcorn comic’ is CLONE.

I could easily buy it in trade only and it’s not ever going to be a 5/5 book. But every month I pick the issue up, have a blast reading it, and keep wanting to buy it in issues. But I can’t imagine I’ll ever go back to read the back issues again because, unlike say Snyder’s Batman or Waid’s DD, it isn’t that compelling to re-read. Not to say I am dissing the main writer Schulner, and his partners, cause I met him this year at NYCC and he’s a super nice dude. But at the end of the day it’s a solid comic but it probably won’t last in my mind as something amazing….If that makes sense.

    • I see what you are saying. I also look forward to reading it when it comes out. It is entertaining as hell reading it in single issues. The story isn’t anything new or groundbreaking, but it’s fun to read

  4. Thanks for taking my question guys! A lotta thinkin’ went into it.

  5. Agreed on the PotW. A very fun comic.

I’m pleasantly surprised how good the Zero Year tie-ins are this week.

I also REALLY miss the pull list feature.

  6. Action Comics #25 was awesome, but it isn’t the only game in town when it comes to quality Superman comics. Adventures of Superman is a fantastic book week in and week out.

  7. Super creeped out by Country Josh…

I really loved Amazing X-Men. It really had that old school Wolverine and the X-Men feel (which has been missing ever since AvX). Can’t wait to read the next issue!

East of West was solid as well. I am really looking forward to seeing what role that particular character plays in the coming issues (and the series as a whole).

I think Super Hero movies could break do without the origin story but only with heroes who don’t really have an interesting origin to begin with. I think TV is the better medium for Super Heroes, since they are liberated from the need of starting out with an origin. They can just show us Daredevil being Daredevil and slowly pepper in bits and pieces of his origin via flashbacks (like they did with Arrow).

  8. Don’t give up the ship on The Ultimates just yet, Josh & Conor. Fialkov & Di Giandomenico are staying on for the 3 issue regular Ultimates: Cataclysm mini. I was thinking about picking up the Bendis & Bagley “Last Stand” series, but I’m glad I held off after hearing you guys discuss it…

  9. Bad news for Josh and Paul and the Ultimate Universe in general. Those Cataclysm books that are coming out? They are actually REPLACING the Ultimate books for the entirety of this “event” which may or may not end the Ultimate Universe. In other words, Paul, there won’t be an Ultimate Spider-Man book anymore just Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man. =/

  10. Paul,

I am with you on your evil Superman comments.
