iFanboy Mini #64 – It Came From the Storage Unit: Iron Man #234 (1988)

Show Notes

Conor Kilpatrick has gone into his storage unit and randomly selected a stack of comics in an attempt to remember the stories just from studying the covers and attempting to jog his addled memory. Will he be successful? The smart money says no, but it will be fun watching him attempt to access parts of his comic book reading brain that have laid dormant for years, and in some cases, decades.

This week is Iron Man #234 from September 1988.

Will Conor find defeat at the hands of a 20 year old comic book with a nondescript cover? Put on your best skinny tie and find out!

  1. Oh boy, I love these. Just watching Conor quietly flicking through the issue and chuckling to himself is entertaining enough for the whole mini!

  2. Heh.  Tony’s 80’s perm always makes me laugh.

  3. 80’s Tony was such a fashion victim.

Is that the issue where Tony wakes up in bed with a dog licking his face, and seems to think it’s Rhodey?  Who apparently wakes him up by licking his face?  Possibly that was another comic where Tony had a perm.

  4. That didn’t happen in this one, but … wow.

  5. @conor  Now I’ll have to figure out which issue that is.  I don’t have that many old Iron Man comics —

  6. Followup:  Okay, yes, this is what I was thinking of!  It’s on page 17, at the top.  He’s waking up, talking about ‘no kissing before breakfast’, and it turns out he’s talking to the dog.  And then Rhodey walks in and says, "I never thought I’d find you waking up with a dog!"

(It’s actually his girlfriend’s dog, but context is for the weak).

And, yeah, I didn’t remember the plot of this issue but I remembered that page instantly.  My brain operates weirdly sometimes.

  7. Love these segments, Conor.  I can’t wait to see what’s next.

I read this issue last night. I liked it! It had a few chuckles in it, like when Rhodey tries to pick up the woman running the flight simulator at the expo.

"I can go real slow… if the target’s right. Ms?"

Radioactive Man does some serious monologuing in this issue, and he’s built like a brick-shithouse. Pretty formidable foe for Spider-Man. I’m still waiting for RM and the Thunderbolts to take on Spider-Man. My God, whenever that fight goes down, it will be awesome.

Great segment. Get cracking on that theme music! Something with a pipe organ, maybe White Zombie’s "Welcome to Planet Motherfucker."

And next time, Conor and oh!caroline should team-up beforehand to prognosticate on what storylines come from the Storage Unit.

  9. @pymslap  I appreciate the thought, but I swear, this one only stuck in my head because of Tony kissing the dog.

    "PUGGINS!"

(Ever seen a puggle? They’re a cross between a beagle and a pug, and are more adorable than Franklin Richards with an atom smasher.)
