iFanboy #237 – New York Comic Con 2011 (Part Two)

Show Notes

Once yearly, the comics industry descends on the far west side of Manhattan and crams into the all too tiny confines of the Jacob K. Javits Center for New York Comic Con. And as we do, iFanboy is there to talk to your favorite creators and get the scoop on what’s going on and what’s coming up. Enjoy this third of four episodes from New York Comic Con 2011!

Rob Liefeld is a comic book loving and making maniac! One of the biggest announcements at New York Comic Con was the return of the Extreme line at Image Comics, overseen by Liefeld. And if that wasn’t enough, Liefeld is keeping himself busy drawing two monthly books: The Infinite from Image Comics and Hawk & Dove at DC Comics!

Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener are one of the most successful indie comics stories of the last few years with Atomic Robo! What’s the deal with the time-spanning robot who is equally at home stomping Nazis and taking meetings in the board room?

Archie Comics Co-Publisher Jon Goldwater and Archie Comics President Mike Pellerito are the men behind one of the most daring and innovative comic book companies these days — that’s right, Archie Comics! They give the lowdown on what’s exciting at Archie Comics!

Francis Manapul is one half of the team behind one of the biggest books in comics: The Flash! As both the co-writer and the artist responsible for Barry Allen’s adventures, Manapul is a man constantly on the move.

Archaia Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Stephen Christy is a big reason why Archaia Entertainment is producing some of the most interesting and innovate original graphic novels on the stands today. Books from the likes of Jim Hensen, Brent Schoonover, and Marjane Satrapi. Christy shows off some of his wares and makes us want to spend a lot of money.

Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie just can’t seem to shake each other, even though they aren’t working together (at the moment). But while they might not be teaming up at the moment, both have found their home in the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe. Plus: Jamie McKelvie blushes and Kieron Gillen sings!

  1. I think I’m going to be spending a lot of money on Archaia books this year.

    • I hear that. I am continuously impressed by their line. I picked up Tumor, The Engineer, Some New Kind of Slaughter, and the first two vols. of Mouse Guard at this con. Ran across a few other things while at their booth. Mr. Murder is Dead looks awesome.

  2. I think I’m going to sing Kieron’s theme song to myself with every issue.

  3. Nice excitable Liefeld interview, and a good ending with the LADS themselves. X

  4. Call the police! Someone has murdered Josh’s voice!

  5. GO TEAM PHONOGRAM!

  6. Avatar photo JeffR (@JeffRReid) says:

Oh man. All that Archaia stuff looks amazing. I’m so happy that I preordered Tale of Sand, as it looks great. Something tells me that I’m going to be preordering Rust in the near future.

  7. Two Statements: I will own Rust. Kieron Gillen is awesome.

One Question: How many pages of Jamie McKelvie’s X-Men Season One will Ron buy?

  8. Kieron Gillen was such a nice, sweet guy when I met him at NYCC. He was my first guy in a wave of writers/artists I wanted to get autographs. I got lucky because it was early so he was kinda by himself for the time. Just went up to him, got his autograph, and got into a 5min convo about Journey Into Mystery and the future of the book.

A lot of people were nice that day (like Snyder or Tomasi) but Gillen definitely was the highlight for me that day.

  9. awesome, it’s like night and day w/ Josh’s interview. way to persevere. great show guys. thanks

  10. This is awesome. I just happened to pick up the first Atomic Robo trade today at my LCS. Started reading it at work while waiting for stuff to do. I was hoping it’d be a kinda funny book, but was just SURE it was going to try and be super serious. I’m glad to see I was wrong and got the balls-to-the-wall fun book I was hoping for. It has me giggling like a little kid every other panel.

  11. Third week in a row that the podcast isn’t uploading through iTunes to my iPod. Why is this? And can someone from the site acknowledge that they’ve noticed this problem?

    • Hey Josh. We haven’t seen/noticed this problem. Can you email contact@ifanboy.com and let us know exactly what is (or isn’t) happening – exactly what iTunes says etc along with what version of iTunes you’re using, your Operating System and model of iPod and we’ll take a look – sorry you’re having difficulty

    • hey ron, im fully up to date on itunes and ios 5 and im having the same problem, only with the video show.

  12. Cool con coverage, I dig. I’ve never seen Night Court but I kinda want to now, that intro is pure class!
